Suzanne Beck, executive director of the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce, said downtown property owners would never have supported the business improvement district if they were paying a higher tax rate. Additionally, the rate was an attractive incentive for Kollmorgen to stay in the city. Higgins agreed, saying that Kollmorgen looked at other communities with higher tax rates, but staying in Northampton will allow them to save more than 50 percent on their tax bills.
