Statement from City Councilor David Narkewicz Concerning the 2009 City Election

Ward 4 City Councilor David Narkewicz circulated the following announcement this morning:

Dear Ward Four Friends and Neighbors,

Today I am announcing that I will not seek re-election this fall to a third term on the Northampton City Council.

Serving as your Ward Four City Councilor has been a great experience. I deeply appreciate the support you have given me over the last four years as I’ve tried to provide the positive and effective leadership I promised when I first asked for your votes in 2005. I am especially grateful to my wife and daughters for their love, encouragement, and sacrifice. My return to “civilian life” will mean more time for family and the pursuit of new challenges both personal and professional. Northampton is a great city and you can be assured that I will continue to stay involved in our community just as I was prior to seeking elective office.

With change comes opportunity — in Ward Four we have an opportunity for new voices and ideas in city government. I am making this announcement early to allow interested residents a chance to explore running for the position prior to the official start of the election calendar [PDF] on April 2, 2009. That is when nomination papers for all of the elected offices (Mayor, City Council, School Committee, etc.) appearing on the November 3, 2009 city ballot will be made available to candidates by the City Clerk. I am happy to meet or speak with anyone about the position and encourage people to call or e-mail me with questions.

Representing the people of Ward 4 on the City Council is an incredible honor. I thank my fellow residents for twice giving me that honor and pledge to continue working hard on behalf of our neighborhoods and city for the remainder of my term in office.

Best wishes,
David
